This Valentine’s, think outside the chocolate box

Young couple together in park by the car

Couples who have been together for a while often want to think outside the box of chocolates, the rose bouquet, or the candlelight dinner on Valentine’s  If you are considering some ways to freshen up your V-Day routine we’ve provided some ideas and traditions by which you can mark the occasion. When it comes to demonstrating love, there are as many ways to do it as there are couples .

V-Day charcuterie board:
If you believe good food is the way to a loved one’s heart then it is likely on your short-list of gift ideas.  Charcuterie is a fun, tasty, and straightforward-to-assemble option that you’ll both savor. Buy fruits. Buy cured meat.  Buy Cheese. Include any other delectable treats if you wish. Then let your creativity take hold.  Many of these ingredients are already available in the red-pink palette of Valentine’s colors. Take it to the next level with heart-shaped cheese slices using cookie cutter shapes. Dress it all up with a rose or two and serve with something bubbly and/or your favorite beverages..

Indoor camping:
Its February and so for the majority of the ‘fair weather campers’ out there, who still want to keep it outdoorsy, might we suggest evoking the intimacy of camping in the wintertime by setting up a tent in the living room.  Ok, maybe you aren’t that committed to the dream of indoor winter camping, but if you don’t tent it in the living room, why not bring games, snacks, blankets, and even a flashlight for setting the rustic mood.

Lovey affirmations around the house:
If your sweetie gets excited by affirmations, then a simple idea that can also be touching is to leave little notes around the house.  Pink and red post-it notes. Fill the pad with things that you love about your partner. On Valentine’s Day, get up before your partner and put them up all around the house: on bathroom mirrors, on doors, in the cabinets so s/he can enjoy surprise love notes all throughout the day

Surprise trip:
Does your partner love adventure and surprise? Take them on a ‘spur of the moment’ day trip! Realistically, you’ll research activities in advance to avoid a valentine’s day flop, but tell your partner nothing except what to wear and bring. Then, take them on a day of fun that will leave them guessing. Cap it off with dinner at a well-reviewed restaurant

Location, Location, Location.

Start your own Valentine’s tradition:
Tradition has its roots in a shared experience and isn’t that what it’s all about? .Starting your own tradition is a great way to make the holiday personal.

Perhaps one year you tried to get dinner at a fancy restaurant only to find they were full, so instead you got burgers at a dive bar and had a fantastic evening. Have dive bar burgers at Valentine’s every year and it will become your special thing. Think about how you spent your past Valentine’s Days together and whether there is anything that can be pulled forward to keep the tradition. Did you have Italian food at your first Valentine’s Day? Make spaghetti and meatballs a la Lady and the Tramp an annual tradition. Is there one corny romance movie you both love? Theme your Valentine’s around that movie.
